Alachua County Uses Notification Technology to Share Vital Information on Hurricane Charley

- Sheriff’s Office Creates Communications Network with Public Safety Organizations and Community -

Gainesville, Florida As Hurricane Charley approached the Florida coastline, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Combined Communications Center employed its newest public safety ally to help prepare the county for the potential emergency ahead.

The office used an automated emergency notification system, known as The Communicator!, to rapidly send critical information to key groups, including law enforcement officers, fire-rescue personnel and stations, local residents with special needs and other emergency management organizations. By sharing this vital information, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Combined Communications Center was able to create a powerful communications network within the county, keeping these individuals and agencies alert of the situation and potentially saving lives.

Voice messages automatically delivered by the technology provided report-for-duty instructions to communications center staff, law enforcement officers and fire-rescue personnel; important information to people with special needs throughout the area; and advice on how to obtain assistance from the Alachua County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

The Communicator! is an emergency notification software application developed by DCC (Dialogic Communications Corporation), the global leader in critical communications technology. Used by hundreds of public safety operations across the country, such as the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, the technology is proven to provide rapid, accurate communication with first responders and communities-at-risk in times of crisis.

“In situations like Hurricane Charley, getting the right information at the right time can save lives,” said Gene Kirby, president of DCC. “Through their use of The Communicator!, the Alachua County Sheriff’s office was able to coordinate a combined emergency response effort with other public safety agencies in the area. By communicating quickly, they were better prepared to handle the imminent crisis.”

DCC’s critical communications technology was utilized by numerous public safety and local government organizations throughout Florida before, during and after Hurricane Charley, ultimately aiding in public safety initiatives statewide.
