Charlotte-Mecklenburg EMA Takes Critical Communications Technology On-line

- DCC to Provide New Web-Based Emergency Notification Capabilities to Largest North Carolina County -

Franklin, Tennessee – Emergency Management Agency (EMA) of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, the largest county in North Carolina, has once again strengthened its commitment to public safety by installing the latest evolution of emergency notification technology. In August of 2004, the emergency management office will upgrade its current system to a new web-based automated alert solution developed by DCC (Dialogic Communications Technology) – the global leader in critical communications technology.

The implementation of DCC’s Communicator! NXT and GeoCast Web will upgrade Charlotte-Mecklenburg EMA’s current technologies, The Communicator! and GeoCast, providing the agency with enhanced and even more powerful emergency notification capabilities. Through the Internet, emergency management officials will now be able to automatically and remotely deliver information to key audiences, such as first responders, communities, local authorities and county management, in critical, as well as non-critical situations. The new system offers greater flexibility and broadens the types of situations in which the technology may be utilized.

“We’ve had tremendous success with DCC’s technology in the past and look forward to the same results with the new solutions,“ said Wayne Broome, Charlotte-Mecklenburg EMA director. “This success is not only a result of an effective product, but pays tribute to the development of teamwork and partnerships with emergency responders and with other departments at the city and county level. Working in such a large county, our team needs flexibility to communicate with other team members, city officials and/or residents without having to rely on a centralized location to send out notifications. The enhanced web aspect of our new system eliminates any potential geographic boundaries that previously existed.”

Operated remotely though an Internet connection, Communicator! NXT will provide Charlotte-Mecklenburg EMA with the ability to contact hundreds, or even thousands, of individuals within minutes from any given location. Once activated, the system will deliver critical information through all available communications media with unprecedented speed, precision and reliability. GeoCast Web, DCC’s latest mapping software will enable the county to selectively target and notify individuals, based specifically on location, during an emergency situation.

For example, the EMA could send severe weather notices to residents living on the east side of Charlotte-Mecklenburg in the event a storm was approaching. Residents in the selected area would receive a phone call from county officials informing them of the storm and its anticipated impact on their area, safety precautions, etc.

“Charlotte-Mecklenburg has been using DCC's products with great success since 1998,” said Gene Kirby, president and chairman of DCC. “These new web-based enhancements will allow county officials to increase their flexibility, range and effectiveness in reaching targeted audiences in critical and routine situations alike.”

DCC currently provides on-site system deployments and off-site (hosted) services to hundreds of public and private organizations across the country. Progressive public safety operations nationwide depend on DCC's emergency notification technology to automatically alert first responders, media, local residents or entire communities-at-risk.  From hazardous materials incidents to evacuations to community policing, the company's critical communications solutions are industry-renowned for their innovation, reach and reliability.
